Beyoncé announces new visual album ‘Black is King’ (watch the trailer)

Beyoncé has announced Black is King, a new visual album that will be out July 31 via Disney+. It's based on her 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift that was inspired by the live-action remake of The Lion King. (Bey voiced voiced Nala in the film and remade Lion King classic "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" for it.) “‘Black Is King’ is a celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience,” reads the official press release. “The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future.” Here's more:

The voyages of Black families, throughout time, are honored in a tale about a young king’s transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity. His ancestors help guide him toward his destiny, and with his father’s teachings and guidance from his childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his home and throne.

These timeless lessons are revealed and reflected through Black voices of today, now sitting in their own power. “Black Is King” is an affirmation of a grand purpose, with lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture. The film highlights the beauty of tradition and Black excellence.

Beyonce recently released new single "Black Parade" in honor of Juneteenth, and shared a new Tidal playlist featuring James Brown, Buddy, Gil Scott-Heron, Burna Boy, Bob Marley, Curtis Mayfield, Nipsey Hussle, her sister Solange, and more. She also penned an open letter to Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, urging him to bring charges against the officers who killed Breonna Taylor.

Earlier this year she appeared on a new remix of Megan Thee Stallion's "Savage."

Beyonce's visual album Lemonade was released via HBO, and she made Coachella concert film Homecoming for Netflix (and has a deal for two more projects through that streaming service.)
