Billie Eilish Sings for Her ‘Future’ (And Everyone Else’s, Too)

There’s an election coming up in November. Please register to vote. And then, please actually vote.

Billie Eilish also implores you to do so, as it will have a massive impact on her future, and my future, and your future. Everyone’s future.

The 18-year-old When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? superstar returned at the very end of July on an unexpectedly optimistic note with “my future,” her latest single.

As part of this week’s ongoing Democratic National Convention, Billie confidently spoke out against the President of the United States, encouraged everyone to register to vote, and sang the song live for the first time.

While no one should be particularly thrilled about having to watch socially distanced live events for the next [insert length of time], this particular performance encapsulates the special experience of seeing her at an up-close-and-personal showcase as opposed to the usual theaters and arenas filled with shrieking teens, demonstrating just how arresting her studio-ready vocals really are in a pin-drop quiet setting.

It’s a shadowy, eerie and vaguely ominous staging – which is very Billie’s aesthetic, and very fitting for the current cultural climate of 2020 – but the swoon-filled message in the lyricism and warm smirks coming from one of Gen Z’s leading ambassadors still manage to convey a crucial sense of hope. Well done as always, Billie.
