“There’s a big black hole where my heart used to be…”
Griff‘s still got the good stuff.
The 19-year-old England-bred multitalented Chinese-Jamaican singer-songwriter and certified One to Watch™ is on a roll, having secured the blogosphere buzz bag with heaps of praise from various outlets over the past year, including a Top 5 placement in the BBC’s prestigious Sound of… for 2021, as well as providing a song for a Disney Christmas ad. To kick off the new year, Griff’s back with a brand new tune called “Black Hole” – and no, it’s not a Lindsay Lohan cover, sadly. But it’s still great.
Produced and co-written by Lostboy (Little Mix‘s “Gloves Off,” Rita Ora‘s “How to Be Lonely,” among others), the bouncy-but-bitter bop finds the talented vocalist trying to find her footing again and fill the void inside after a former flame suddenly and unexpectedly bid adieu. Men. Boo!
“There’s a big black hole where my heart used to be / And I tried my best to fill it up with things I don’t need / It don’t work like that, no, it’s not easy / To fill this gap that you left in me,” she croons on the instant earworm.
“I wrote this song as a bittersweet heartbreak track. I actually love how melodramatic it is, as there’s obviously not ‘a big black hole where my heart used to be,’ but the melodrama of the lyrics – over a really interesting beat – keeps the song fun, and not too serious,” Griff explains.
It is quite the young love heartache anthem, much like a certain other fellow teen queen storming the charts with her own cathartic car ride around the block. A big year for teenage melodrama so far – and surely even bigger stuff for Griff still to come.
