Throughout her career, pop superstar Halsey has become known for crafting deeply personal lyrics that don’t hold back on calling out injustice, including misogyny, homophobia, and ex-boyfriends.
But along with her music, Halsey has also made a name for herself on social media, where the singer often shares her thoughts, feelings and jokes through an unfiltered lens. That’s especially true for when the star is issuing clap backs at public controversies, coming for everyone from Twitter trolls to fellow celebrities.
Below, we’ve compiled just a few of our favorite Halsey clap backs.
1. Her defense of Miley Cyrus
When news broke earlier this week that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth had split after a few months of marriage, fans had a lot of different reactions. But one of them struck a chord with Halsey when a Twitter user claimed that the pair split thanks to Cyrus’ bisexuality, saying “Bi is greedy and never satisfied.” Halsey, having none of it, promptly responded. “Doesn’t surprise me that ur saying this and ur page has u crying about Brie Larson too!” she tweeted. “Stop being afraid of women who aren’t afraid to do what pleases them and not other people :-)”
Hey tigerbob. Doesn’t surprise me that ur saying this and ur page has u crying about Brie Larson too! Stop being afraid of women who aren’t afraid to do what pleases them and not other people :-) https://t.co/uPyB1cXE0D— h (@halsey) August 11, 2019
2. Her subtle Machine Gun Kelly diss
Remember that time that Machine Gun Kelly and G-Eazy were beefing? Halsey does. Back in 2018, MGK appeared on The Breakfast Club, where interviewer Charlamagne the God asked him if he had “smashed” G-Eazy’s former girlfriend (Halsey). “Absolutely,” he replied. So, Halsey took to Twitter to address the new rumor, simply writing “how *absolutely* pathetic.” Just three words, yet everyone knew exactly what she was talking about.

3. Her response to the Victoria’s Secret controversy
Last year, an executive from Victoria’s Secret was quoted in Vogue having said that he would not allow transgender or plus-sized models to walk in their annual fashion show because it didn’t play into the “fantasy” of the event. Halsey was the last person that fans expected to respond — the singer was the headlining performer for that year’s show. But she did, in a now-deleted note to her Instagram, telling her fans to donate to GLSEN instead of watching the event. "We stand in solidarity, and complete and total acceptance is the only ‘fantasy’ that I support," she said.
4. Her kiss-off to critics of her performance on The Voice
When Halsey took to the stage of NBC's The Voice for a performance of her single “Without Me,” she ended up delivering an empowering message about LGBTQ representation by performing provocatively with a female dancer. Some viewers went online to express their outrage with the expression of same-sex love, but Halsey was not pressed. “Very proud to have pissed off thw [sic] homophobic viewers at home who missed the message. Thanks for watching,” she wrote on Twitter.
Very proud of the emotional performance i did with @JadeChynoweth on @NBCTheVoice tonight. And also very proud to have pissed off thw homophobic viewers at home who missed the message. Thanks for watching. ----— h (@halsey) December 19, 2018
5. Her hilarious comeback to homophobic concert-goers at large
As with most other queer performers, Halsey’s concerts get occasionally crashed by anti-LGBTQ protesters of the religious variety. Instead of ignoring the bigoted picketers, Halsey decided to give them a piece of her mind. “I feel like I’ve done enough good in the world that God’s gonna forgive me for eating some pussy,” she wrote.
people bring anti-LGBT religious propaganda to my concerts a lot and it’s like, I feel like I’ve done enough good in the world that God’s gonna forgive me for eating some pussy.— h (@halsey) August 27, 2018
6. Her furious response to Ivanka Trump’s “Sunday morning”
Halsey has made it no secret that she is a staunch opposer of the Trump administration. Back in May of last year, news had broken that the government had “lost track” of 1,500 unaccompanied immigrant children who were separated from their families. So when Ivanka Trump posted a photo with her son on Twitter with the hashtag #SundayMorning, Halsey unleashed on her in a since-deleted tweet. “I wonder what #SundayMorning is like for the parents of 1500 lost children your father is responsible for,” she wrote. “Fuck your #SundayMorning.”
7. Her support for Taylor Swift amid her Scooter Braun feud
Scooter Braun divided the music world in two earlier this year when it was announced that he had purchased Big Machine Label Group, and all of Taylor Swift’s masters along with it. Some artists defended the mogul’s decision, while others, including Halsey, stood with Swift. In a heartfelt note posted to her social media, Halsey thanked Swift for serving as an inspiration, while also subtly calling out Braun for perpetuating an unfair system. “It turns my guts that no matter how much power or success a woman has in this life, you are still susceptible to someone coming along and making you feel small out of spite,” she wrote.
