In spite of everything, Megan Thee Stallion is thriving.
As one of the first performers to truly take the concept of a quarantine performance to the next level with her phenomenal set at the 2020 BET Awards back in June at a time when the world was still settling into the New Normal™ amid the pandemic, it only makes sense that the 25-year-old superstar would grab her crown – no, golden metallic cowboy hat – and lead us out of this most wretched year with a fiery finale fit for a Super Bowl halftime show.
On Monday (December 14), Megan Thee Stallion celebrated her win as Apple Music’s Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2020 Apple Music Awards with a medley of hits while paying tribute to her hometown of Houston, Texas.
And frankly? She…body-ody-ody-ody-odyed it. (Sorry, had to.)
For real, though: she is the moment, and she made sure to let us know in the form of an incredible performance, tackling everything from “Realer” to “Girls in the Hood” to “Cash Shit” to “Don’t Stop” to “Savage (Remix)” to, of course, “Body.”
Meg’s quite simply a star, as illustrated by the one that burst into flames just behind her, as she fired off her verses dripping in gold, flanked by horseback riders and dancers. The pyrotechnics and gritty rock elements added to each of the songs provided even more of a punch, and every glance at the camera oozed with the superstar charm of a performer who’s already been running the game for years.
There were interview moments and throwback clips sprinkled in between the tracks, in which Megan discussed her upbringing, launching her rap career while studying at college to become a nurse, as well as her unstoppable sense of confidence and unrelenting positivity. She knows she’s beautiful, and wants you to know that you are, too.
When it was time to get down to business and do it cowgirl style again, she worked and twerked her way through the stables as the boys thirsted for a chance at taking a ride during “Cash Shit.” She joined the ladies for a fierce “Don’t Stop,” then appropriately hit the bleachers for “Savage (Remix),” supplying shades of Beyoncé‘s iconic 2018 Coachella performance on the stairs while showcasing the strength of those iron knees over and over again.
And the time she fully got tongues wagging with “Body,” supplying all of those thigh-slapping, hip-shaking moves in unison with her dancers, it became abundantly clear she’s got the wattage to fill entire stadiums – whenever that’s legally allowed again, anyway. What a performance.
Few artists won 2020 as thoroughly and consistently as Megan Thee Stallion did. Real hot girl shit, indeed.
“Savage” is available now as a limited pink vinyl.
