Netflix Is Releasing a BLACKPINK Documentary

BLACKPINK in your area, and on your streaming platform – and, oh yes, on your Billboard Hot 100 charts too.

Fresh off the “Ice Cream” truck with their new BFF Selena Gomez, the unstoppable South Korean foursome just scooped up their highest-ever chart ranking (No. 13) on the Hot 100 as of Tuesday (September 8), providing the group their first-ever Top 20 U.S. hit – and further proof that BLACKPINK can’t stop, won’t stop ddu-du-ing it all the way to the top – until they rename it the Boombayah Charts.

The girls should feel proud of their latest career triumph, because this is a major accomplishment. It’s also kind of an emotional one for the fans, and for anyone else who champions international acts, just hoping they get to enjoy a stateside crossover moment. It’s all very, very exciting…but not as exciting as mouth-feeding a Capybara, if you ask Jennie.

And the good news doesn’t stop at the charts: taking a cue from SelGo’s streaming foray with her successful Selena + Chef series on HBO Max, BLACKPINK are bringing BLINKs closer in the form of a Netflix documentary arriving later this fall.

BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky will be directed by Caroline Suh (Salt Fat Acid Heat), and is hitting Netflix on October 14 – and yes, there will be special music icons made available bearing the bright faces of Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo and Rosé. (In this household, we stan them all.)

Here’s a synopsis, via Netflix: “Directed by Caroline Suh, director of the Netflix docuseries Salt Fat Acid Heat, and produced by RadicalMedia, the film interweaves exclusive interviews with never-before-seen footage of BLACKPINK members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa, from their trainee days to the global sensations they are today. Viewers will get a first look into the recording process of the band’s follow-up album, which depicts the highs and lows of being a K-pop idol group, and showcases each member’s incredible talent that when combined, creates the uniquely trailblazing DNA of BLACKPINK. The film culminates with their historic 2019 Coachella performance, where BLACKPINK was the first K-pop girl group to take on the Coachella stage.”

This is already an interesting development, seeing as it’s (seemingly) not just coming straight from YG Entertainment. While their infectious personalities are always fun to watch, I’m wondering how deep the girls will also go in terms of sharing real glimpses of their off-stage lives and getting candid about the tough trainee days, the less-than-desirable effects of their insane level of fame, and what must surely be incredibly grueling lifestyle as global entertainers. This could be a really captivating production. Again, very exciting!

And if all that wasn’t enough, there’s still the actual album! No literally, it’s…The Album, their eternally delayed debut, and it’s also arriving in October alongside the documentary.

Halloween won’t happen like usual this year given the state of everything, but at least we’ve got BLACKPINKtober.
