The singer-songwriter joined forces with Citizen Cope for the tribute to the late R&B icon.
Sheryl Crow released a new cover of Bill Withers' "Lonely Town, Lonely Street" on Monday (April 6) to honor the legendary singer-songwriter's passing.
Teaming up with Citizen Cope, Crow strips the grooving R&B tune down to its acoustic bones, trading verses with the alt-rock soul singer over gentle guitar and percussion. "You might be a sweet young/ Sweet young pretty, pretty/ And at the dances, you can't keep your seat/ But if dances don't lead to romances/ You might as well be born/ Born with two left feet, yeah," she croons.
"I love Bill Withers. His passing last week was a heavy blow, on top of the challenges we’re all facing just trying to live day to day right now,” Crow said in a statement. "Times like these remind us about what’s really important in life -- love, family, living life in harmony with each other and our planet. Bill’s music was about that, and so much more."
While not released as an official single, the fan-favorite cut served as the opening track on Withers' 1972 sophomore album, Still Bill, which gave the musician his sole No. 1 LP on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
