The protests and Riots around the world are like stories told in history books. Sadly, history repeats itself over and over again when it comes to Racism and police brutality. This has inspired the title of Trey Songz’ latest record,“2020 Riots: How Many Times.” Songz has created hit records singing about love, relationships, heartbreak, and sex. However, he puts a pause on that (due to recent events) to address a topic new to his discography but old to the world — Racism.
In the powerful anthem, he asks, “How many mothers have to cry?/ How many brothers gotta die?/ How many more times?/ How many more times?/ How many more marches?/ How many more signs?/ How many more lives?/ How many more times?” He also describes situations where Black people have been murdered like sitting in their homes or going out for a jog.
In a press statement the singer said, “Three or four nights ago I woke up in the middle of my sleep…I couldn’t sleep. My chest was hurting. I got up and called my producer, Troy Taylor and I said ‘We’ve got to make music that really touches the soul, that really addresses what the world is feeling right now. Especially our people.’”
A portion of the proceeds from the release of the single will directly benefit both Black Lives Matter and the Community Justice Exchange’s National Bail Fund Network.
